I’ve been there myself. I’ve gotten so excited about new ideas from workshops or books, only to go back to the reality of my office and the overwhelm of what to do first and how to fit it into my already-packed schedule. Somehow, all my good intentions and great ideas fell by the wayside as I slid back into my old routines without really implementing anything new. Sometimes, I did manage to try out a new technique or strategy on my own, but it was much slow and painful figuring it all out without help. I felt like I was stumbling around in the dark trying to find the light switch. A little guidance would have made a big difference!

A few years ago, I tried masterminding with buddies – others who were in the same boat as me trying to increase their fundraising. We’d agree to meet regularly and help each other out. But our busy schedules soon pulled us away from that weakly-formed commitment and I was soon back on my own again:

• There was no accountability in actually implementing strategies or reaching goals.
• There was no strong Mentor to definitively answer questions and give strong direction.
• People weren’t financially invested in it, so they didn’t take it seriously, and would soon start to miss calls or not show up.

What I found out is that these do-it-yourself groups just became a waste of my valuable time, not getting me closer to reaching my goals. The idea was good, but the outcome frustrating.

I love the idea of Masterminding, but I realized to make it work people need to have some “skin in the game.” They need to be really invested in the group and they need a structured format with a strong Mentor running the show. Once I experienced this (I’m in a program now that offers this), I began to see REAL results and accountability that I never had experienced before, not just from the Mentor, but from the other Mastermind members, too.

And best of all, I had finally found my tribe. Fundraisers are a lonely breed. Not many people understand us and what we face. In this kind of close Mastermind, you can find  people who will celebrate your victories and help you sort out the challenges. You’ll find colleagues who will share their ideas and experiences to help you find solutions. In my Mastermind, I found a sacred space – one where I felt supported and where I felt like I belonged, and that’s been more helpful than I could have imagined.
